Inoue Natsumi
((second draft))
"Oboro"
"This is the end."
The last words she heard before the last battle of her people began. Enemy clans of Inoue and Nakada arrived early one morning on the fields that seperated their lands. Blood covered the ground as each shinobi exerted themselves to their ultimate limit, defending their land, their pride, and their ninjutsu against the opposing side. The air thick with the metallic scent of blood, Oboro choked back the urge to run, and fought on beside her parents, leader of the Inoue clan.
With numbers severly depleted and what people they had left still exhausted from their last battle, victory was near impossible to envision on the battlefield that day. But, still, the Inoue clan fought on, even as slowly their numbers diminished still, one by one. She saw her family go down, first her mother, then her father, and then her brothers before the enemy went after her, the last of the Inoue shinobi.
Her attention faltered for a moment as she scanned the field, realizing that she was last person of her family left. That moment was all the enemy needed and all she remembered next was the searing pain of the shuko (hand claws) as it raked down her back and then the sword plunging into her chest. Blacked out from the pain and exhaustion, she was left for dead. The enemy had won.
She awoke to the stench of rotting bodies, and the noise of predators feasting on her friends, family, and the enemy. How long has it been that she laid there while the enemy destroyed her family, her friends, her home, the village? Days, Weeks, Months. She didn't know. Painfully, she rose from her spot, dried blood flaking off her back and chest. The pain lancing through her body anew as she struggled to her feet and made her way into the forest.
She thought briefly of returning to her village but the thought quickly left her mind as she realized that even were she able to make it back up the mountain in her condition, by now, her village would no longer be her village, if it even still existed. The enemy would have destroyed the Inoue village by now. She looked over her shoulder, back towards the blood soaked fields and gave a moment of silence to her family and friends but she would not allow herself to dwell on the misery too long; such was the way of the shinobi, such was their duty and the risks of their lifestyle.
Unable to, nor wanting to, return to the village, she wandered Japan for some time before leaving the island and making her way west through mainland Asia to Europe.
Her loyalties now only lay with the dead.
